Viva Vocal Ensemble is a 5-piece ensemble founded in contemporary vocal practice and the rich spectra of the voice. Building a new repertoire through collaborations with living composers, this ensemble has a focus on new works and the experimental.

Integral to the concept are two things: one being an exploration of the capabilities of the voice, interpreting gestural extensions, sounding guttural expression, navigating intricate microtonality, and deconstructing vocal conventions; and the other an exploration of room and spatiality in performance. Fusing these together is the establishment of an irrevocable interconnection between voice, body, and movement, in space and time.

All members are established in their musicality, having developed their own distinctive artistic perspectives and expression, enriching the group sound and performative possibilities.

A journey is undertaken as smooth rolling dissonance and soundscapes that overlap, intersect, traverse and unite meet with instinctive brush strokes as they dissect the white light with the black of a pen, smelting together the ear with the eye. What is seen, what is heard, what is felt is a story told that will linger awhile and gently arouse the intrigue of ones senses.

‘NAKED’ explores the extended properties of the voice within improvisation and composition. It weaves together the acoustic with the use of carefully chosen pedals and percussion items to elongate, layer and embellish a piece. The key is subtle precision in the midst of the wildness of all things spontaneous.

Bowls and bells ring. The bow sings. Pedals capture, contort and distort. Soundscapes emerge and establish. All things intricately woven together captivating space and enticing with intrigue. Here, the prepared double bass and amplified extended voice, steered with careful intent through cables and pedals, meet effortlessly.

JOINING FORCES is Casey Moir, Linda Olah and Isabel Sörling - three of Sweden’s foremost vocal improvisers. Together, with an array of electronics and pedals, they form an ensemble that is founded in the rich spectra of the voice; everything from sophisticated tonal masses to multifaceted guttural outbursts to the most fragile of harmonics; all of which is routed through an electrical web that distorts, misconstrues, fractures and deconstructs a constantly evolving soundscape. These three unique voices challenge boundaries and explore the curiosities found in each others sounds and textures as they weave, layer and overlap. All are established and mature in their musicality and have developed their own distinctive artistic expression. The result is one new collective voice with three bodies and endless possibilities.

From north to south the members of this band have gathered to form this collaboration of five Swedish & Australian musicians. Together they fuse the spontaneous with the unconventional, composition with open interpretation and allow their intuitive joint expression to intricately weave it all together in some form of coherent chaos.

While on tour in Sweden, Germany and Poland, SVELIA surprised their audiences as they “frame the liberating madness of free expression within the form of song”. In Krakow, Poland it was quoted that “Svelia's music happens on fringes of a variety of styles - radical improvisation is countered by tricky and disciplined compositions, bursting energy by heartbreaking lyricism, hard-edged harmonies by melodies that will haunt your mind in sleep”

SVELIA celebrated the release of their debut album 'Live @ Alchemia' with a tour in Australia this January. They had a ball playing at venues such as Bennetts Lane, Uptown Jazz Cafe and NIMA (Newcastle Improvised Music Association). They also spent 2 days at Sing Sing recording studios to record their up-coming album. May 2015 they will embark on their second european tour to release the album 'Transitions'.

MOCO is a dynamic voice and piano duo. Their driving energy coupled together with their intuitive interaction, has them moulding unique stories in and around notes, phrases, sounds and melodies. Both Naoko and Casey experiment with the boundaries of their instruments by exploring new and existing improvisational and compositional possibilities. Their music is percussive and intoxicating, freeing and harmonic, full of surprise and tension, soothing and gentle, atonal and disjointed, wild and expressive. Together they go beyond what is expected of a voice/piano duo.

MOCO has played at some of Sweden foremost venues and festivals for jazz and improvised music including Fasching Jazz Club - Stockholm, Nefertiti Jazz Club - Gothenburg and Umeå Jazz Festival. In early 2013 they released their debut self-titled album on the Swedish record label Ljup.
